Founding Proposal

Building a Global Movement for Cancer Psychosocial Care

The Global Movement for Cancer Psychosocial Care (GMCPC) was established in response to a growing recognition that high quality cancer care must address not only the physical aspects of disease but also the psychological, emotional, social, cultural, spiritual, and practical needs of individuals and families affected by cancer. While remarkable advances have transformed cancer diagnosis and treatment, psychosocial care remains unevenly developed and inaccessible for many populations around the world, particularly within resource constrained settings.

The Founding Proposal presents the vision, purpose, principles, and strategic direction of GMCPC. It serves as the foundational document that guides the movement’s development and provides a shared framework for collaboration among researchers, healthcare professionals, educators, policymakers, patient advocates, survivors, caregivers, civil society organisations, academic institutions, and international partners.

Rather than creating another professional society, GMCPC seeks to build a global movement that promotes psychosocial care as an essential pillar of comprehensive, person centred cancer care. The movement recognises that improving psychosocial outcomes requires collaboration across disciplines, sectors, cultures, and countries, while respecting local contexts and strengthening existing health systems.

Purpose of the Proposal

The Founding Proposal has been developed to:

  • Articulate the vision and guiding principles of the movement.
  • Define the mission, objectives, and strategic priorities of GMCPC.
  • Promote global collaboration in research, education, policy, advocacy, and capacity building.
  • Encourage the integration of psychosocial care across the entire cancer continuum.
  • Foster culturally responsive and equitable approaches to psychosocial cancer care.
  • Provide a platform for individuals and organisations committed to advancing whole person cancer care.

Strategic Priorities

The movement is initially focused on several interconnected priorities:

  • Strengthening psychosocial cancer care research and knowledge generation.
  • Building professional capacity through education and training.
  • Promoting culturally responsive models of psychosocial care.
  • Supporting policy development and health system integration.
  • Encouraging multidisciplinary and international collaboration.
  • Empowering patients, survivors, caregivers, and communities.
  • Advancing innovation and evidence informed practice.
  • Expanding equitable access to psychosocial care worldwide.

A Living Document

The Founding Proposal is intended to evolve alongside the movement. As new knowledge emerges, partnerships expand, and the needs of people affected by cancer continue to change, the proposal will be periodically reviewed and refined through consultation with members, collaborators, experts, and partner organisations. This collaborative approach reflects GMCPC’s commitment to continuous learning, shared leadership, scientific integrity, and global inclusiveness.

Join Us

The establishment of the Global Movement for Cancer Psychosocial Care marks the beginning of a shared journey towards transforming cancer care through compassion, collaboration, cultural responsiveness, and evidence informed action. We invite individuals, institutions, professional societies, healthcare organisations, universities, researchers, patient advocates, survivors, caregivers, and development partners to join us in advancing a future where psychosocial care is recognised and delivered as an essential component of quality cancer care for every person, everywhere.

The full Founding Proposal will be published and made available for public download upon its official launch.
